Paediatric Oncology Education and Training

In line with the introduction of national subspecialty training in paediatric oncology, the joint RCPCH/UKCCSG Education & Training Committee introduced the Oncology Higher Specialist Training Record.   This has been designed to complement the existing Higher Specialist Training Portfolio and outlines specific educational objectives relevant to paediatric oncology which should assist the trainee in achieving their personal learning objectives.

Training requirements

The requirements for subspecialty recognition are a minimum of 3 yrs training covering all areas outlined in the Oncology Higher Specialist Training Record. The 3 yrs training should be comprised of the following:

  • Minimum of 2 years full-time clinical paediatric oncology
  • Additional year which may be
    - further clinical paediatric oncology research
    - Allied specialties such as neurology, endocrinology, PICU

Assessment

In addition to the local Deanery Annual Review (at which the trainee’s RITA is completed) there will also be a national oncology annual review towards the end of each training year.  The purpose of this is to assess each trainee’s educational progress in paediatric oncology (the report from this assessment will inform the regional annual review), identify areas of training still to be covered and how this will be achieved and give the trainee an opportunity to discuss any aspect of their training to date.
This national  oncology review involves:

  • Trainee presentation in which they are asked to give a reflective summary of their training in paediatric oncology
  • Review of Oncology Higher Specialist Training portfolio using a standard assessment proforma.
  • Report from trainee’s educational supervisor
  • Assessment of 10 items of anonymised clinical correspondence using the SAIL assessment tool
  • Review of current oncology audit
